Complete Set vs. Master Set vs. Grand Master Set
What counts as a Master Set?
Understanding the difference helps you decide how far you want to take your collection. Here’s how collectors typically define each level:
🟢 Complete Set
The entry-level goal for casual collectors.
Own each unique card artwork once, regardless of variants
Includes: One of every numbered card in the set (e.g. 001–198)
🏆 Master Set
The collector standard — and what most collectors aim for.
Everything you can pull from booster packs
Includes: All base cards, reverse holo versions, secret rares, and special pack variants (e.g. Poké Ball / Master Ball patterns)
👉 A master set can double or even triple the total number of cards compared to a complete set. This is where organization becomes critical.
👑 Grand Master Set
The ultimate set for the completionists.
Everything in the master set, plus cards found outside of booster packs
Includes: Black Star promos, store-exclusive stamped cards (GameStop, Pokémon Center), non-holo deck variants, and STAFF stamped cards
