Completion Difficulty: Medium
Even though the 151 Master Set has fewer cards overall, it’s still a challenging set to finish.
The main reason is the Gen 1 Tax, where the Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare cards of those fan-favorite Kanto starters are especially popular, tougher to pull and more expensive to buy.

How many cards are in the 151 Master Set?
A full 151 Master Set contains:
165 standard set cards
153 reverse holo versions
42 Secret Rares
Total: 360 cards
What counts as a complete 151 Master Set?
A complete 151 Master Set includes 165 regular numbered cards, 153 reverse holo versions, and 42 Secret Rare cards.
A Master Set typically does not include promos or stamped cards. Those are generally included only if you are building a Grand Master Set.
How many binder pages do I need for a 151 Master Set?
For 360 cards, here’s what you need depending on binder layout:
9-Pocket layout requires 20 double-sided pages minimum.
12-Pocket layout requires 15 double-sided pages minimum.
What size binder should I buy for a 151 Master Set?
Since the 151 Master Set has a total of 360 cards we recommend:
✔ 9-Pocket Binder with at least 20 pages capable of holding exactly 360 cards.
✔ 12-Pocket Binder with at least 20 pages if you plan on adding any promos or variants
We personally use the Vault X Exo-Tec Anniversary Edition Zip binder for our 151 Set.
Are promos part of a master set?
In short, no. Promos are not officially part of a master set, since they are released separately from the main numbered expansion.
However, many collectors choose to add Stamped Promos, Store exclusives, Pre-release promos, etc.
But this is personal preference — or sometimes known as a Grand Master Set.
How much does it cost to master 151?
As of recent market tracking, the total value of a complete 151 Master Set sits just under $2,300 USD (not including promos & variants).
We personally use (and love) Collectr to track the market value of our sets. It’s a great (and free!) way to keep tabs on your collection’s value over time.
